When you add multiple objects into a print in AM you cannot lift them off the bed - only X and Y coordinates allowed for moving - can we have a Z axis option too.

I wanted to print an OpenJScad generated Gear for which I only have STL at the moment and mount a holder on the top of it - I’d built the holder in OpenSCAD, exported a second STL and just wanted to plonk it onto of the Gear STL and thus have AM ‘glue the two objects together’ without me having to resort to Superglue…

It doesn’t seem that it should be AM’s job. It is quite complex thing and result is, really, a gcode.

It would be interesting to know if plain Cura or Slic3r allows it. If not - then definitively AM wont.

To me it seems that some other third party software to combine two objects should be used…

but if AM (more likely CURA or SLIC3R) offers side-by-side then why the z-axis restriction?

Actually, the way you put it, maybe there isn’t much of a restriction. Really - why not!

Only issue I see is precision: if you are ok with semi-random placement of one object on top of another then yes.

When they are placed one next to another in one plane - they are separate objects and, logically really, have perfect sense them staying independent objects printed in one go. When they are stacked one on top of another, then they become one object after printing is done and that is, traditionally, responsibility of model manipulation software. So, logically speaking - AM is not geared towards going into model manipulation area.

Physically speaking (from coding perspective) - there’s very little in the way - so, yes, why not! 🙂

the semi-random placement issue can be resolved by extending the Lay Flat feature to lay flat on top of another object 😉

I have both RoboxDual and other Robox versions
    CEL HQ Bristol UK

Lots of this type of operation gets discussed in the office but in many cases it gets put down to “this is the job of design software”

Aligning 2 objects in any accurate way is quite challenging even in mature CAD software. A basic solution within AutoMaker would be very limited so would probably bring more hassle.

There are already a lot of very good free options to merge and create meshes.

Rafts are high on our development list, this is an interesting addition with a LOT of options.

But rafts are achievable already with AM - see here:

    or

Of course it is nice to have direct support in UI as well, but aren’t there far more pressing issues?

In the current version of AM (v1.01.02) I cannot find those strings in the .roboxprofile files.

    Or ‘raft_layers’ must be added?
