This is a Beta feature in AM 2.00.00

This requires a GoPro camera which can be triggered with wifi, Hero3 and Hero4 tested. Your Robox needs to be connected to a computer with an active wifi connection to the GoPro

Find the settings in the Preferences panel

    Then in the Timelapse tab.

When turned on the printer will pause a few seconds as per the settings, move the bed to a fixed location, trigger the camera then resume. There is a delay from the trigger point to the actual frame being captured, this is variable per setup so you can change the time in the settings. 1 frame is taken at the end of each layer.

Be sure to untick the box before you start a print if you don’t want it triggered or it will slow the print down. The triggers get inserted into the code.

Sounds cool. If you own a goPro(i dont 🙁 ) Im guessing this is being used in-house at CEL for promo vids.

Is AM2.0.0 going to be released publically then?

@hagster AM 2.0 will be released to support the dual material head as it is required to operate that system. I expect it within a month, but I know there are still some bugs in it.

I operate two Betas and one Production Robox.

On the basis of this post I’ve just bought a GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition, All I need is a helmet to mount it on…

I finally found the GoPro HERO3 that I’ve never managed to use effectively*, so I was going to give this a go.

I reckon there’s just enough space on the internal panel covering the spool hub, and that also offers the possibility of powering the GoPro from the Robox too. It should be simple to print a mount for it…

Now, I note from the GoPro site that while they don’t list official temperature limits it does have an auto shut-off at 125ºF (51ºC). So, it might be fine inside a Robox during a PLA, XT or nGen print, but not the 60ºC of ABS or HIPS, though. Having it inside would avoid having to shoot through the clear (albeit rather smudged) end window.

    Any thoughts?

(*: during every long bike ride, journey or other opportunity, the damn battery has always died before anything good happened. The only thing I’ve actually used it productively for is watching for the UPS van on Apple Shiny Toy Release Day to stop neck injury whenever I hear a diesel engine go past.)

Or alternatively, maybe offer a replacement end panel with a hole drilled at the ideal spot to stick a GoPro lens through?

Go Pros are great for timelapses and nightlapses - spiral star scapes are awesome if you get them right too
I’ve yet to use my 4 Silver on a sync’ed print yet but did do it last year on sync’ed

Time to revive an old topic 😉

I got a GoPro Hero+ LCD yesterday and I remembered that Robox had support for GoPro so of course I had to try it out. My findings:

    • The good news, It works! Even with the untested Hero+ LCD model.
    • I didn’t think it would though; It’s not a very simple or well documented setup and settings screen. I had to guess what the options would do and there’s no way to test if it works. Maybe add a ‘test’ button that just triggers a manual photo trigger?
    • I need to connect to the wifi hotspot of my GoPro which is quite inconvenient if you need internet over that same connection as well or don’t have wifi on your desktop.
    • The GoPro needs to be in Photo mode and on, if you put it in video mode it will just make a movie of your print resulting in a full SD card in no time
    • The Wifi mode drains the battery of the camera really quickly. If you don’t charge it while using it you won’t be able to create a timelapse of 2+ hours.
    • The feature where your print pauses for a sec. of 2, moves the print to the front of the printer to take a pic and continues is really cool, unfortunately it doesn’t work consistently, I had it working yesterday on my desktop but today on my tablet it wouldn’t pause long enough for the GoPro to take a picture regardless of the settings.
    • Suggestion: Why just GoPro support with the complex setup and limited user base? Isn’t it a lot easier to just support generic webcams instead? They need no external wifi network or battery’s, everyone has them and they require less settings. Just a dropdown of the source in the settings and you have full control over when to take a picture. I’d really love this feature since it’s way more easy to set up at each print.

Unfortunately no cool timelapse to share yet since it’s quite inconsistent for me at the moment, but from what I’ve seen so far is that if you’ve got it right you can create really cool timelapses with the object and print-head in the same place on every frame of it.

@dave glad to hear you’ve had some good results, and thanks for sharing your tips/feedback! We realise this a poorly documented and somewhat scantly implemented feature, bit the truth is it was added initially for our own benefit when creating videos/marketing materials for Robox. It was included in a stable release to let the tinkerers out there have a go.

There are plans to implement a much more robust method with support for more interfaces in a future version, but I’m afraid as usual it’s not high priority right now. Stay tuned and we’d love to see what you’ve been timelapsing! (If that’s a word…haha)

Hey Chris, haha, I understand, awesome that you guys at least just left it in there for us to tinker with, love that kind of stuff 🙂

I think what confused me with the settings is how they apply in Real-time updating while printing. I think the Seconds delay feature is cooked into the gcode (and therefore won’t change after a print has started) and the Camera delay is updated in Real time, this explains why I was able to get it right yesterday from 2 to 0 seconds delay for both fields and not getting it right today 😉

I’ll give it another go on a next print, see if I can get it right again without my battery dying mid-print. I’ll share the results here!

Okay, got the settings right and did a quick and dirty draft print to test it out 🙂

    Settings for GoPro Hero+ LCD:

    • AutoMaker Camera delay: 0
    • AutoMaker Seconds delay: 3 (2 is ok most of the time but in 1% the platform is already on its way back)
    • Photo mode on GoPro
    • GoPro on with Wifi on (App mode)
    • External power for GoPro to make sure it stays on 🙂
    • Other settings: default

Here the result, quality isn’t great (Draft mode with wrong print profile) but creating a perfect print wasn’t my aim this time 😉
