I cannot seem to find a good setting for ABS printing. Everything seems to warp and or not stick to the bed on the first layers and almost 90% of the time the Robox messes something up.
What are the best settings that you guys have found for ABS ?
21/12/2014 at 12:13 pm #12248Having nozzles lowered so first layer is slightly squashed. That plus cleaning bed with IPA makes it quite nice combination. I had long prints of relatively wide area object or short prints with smaller objects (some with brim so it sticks nicely) .
That said, all do have warping issues and I can’t get rid of it. At the moment I am not 100% sure is it really bed’s property or something else. I have tried to increase ambient temperature to 55º as Pete suggested (and not only him) and also put extra padding on the side of printer (and top) to keep temperature as levelled as possible and still nothing. Same objects warp (or curl upwards) on same places. I asked question here many times but seems that nobody knows. At the moment main suggestion is to design object with curved edges and/or mouse ears to keep corners stick to the bed more.
On the other hand I’ve seen prints done by some other printers where boxes were printed nicely flat on corners. So, it is possible but I don’t know what’s the magic ingredient. BTW - I had exactly the same issue with different ABS plastics and PLA…
21/12/2014 at 9:38 pm #12285I am having the same issues, can’t get the first layer to stick, done all the calibration stuff!
What are the best settings for ABS? Guess you use the custom setting?
Cheers

22/12/2014 at 1:01 am #12293I got a bottle of IPA and a microfibre cloth, helped a lot with adhesion. Also I allow the bed to heat up slightly before starting the run, because sometimes the print will start at around 30 degrees ambience, too low in my opinion. So get it warm in there!
04/01/2015 at 1:06 am #12972I do all the cleaning with IPA, bed heating, and high ambient temp stuff and I still get mixed results. Now if it doesn’t stick on the first couple layers I cancel it and move the object to a different part of the bed. Eventually it sticks, but it’s always in a random spot that may or may not have worked on a previous attempt.

04/01/2015 at 2:43 pm #13023the issue with abs not sticking at first and then sticking somewhere random where it did not stick before, may be due to the fact that the ambient was not reached when it was not sticking and that it is reached when it sticks, this may explain the randomness. trying multiple prints and failing actually helps increase the ambient temperature, but another way is to pre-heat the bed before printing. There are other printing materials also that are less susceptible to the ambient temp factor and less hazardous that can be used to avoid this issue.
