Conceived, designed, iterated and finished 1 week after unboxing. Link goes to Imgur album.

I have two cats and too many computers.May 12, 2016 at 5:49 am #29705@drivingmenuts I like! Now change it a little - make it so the laptop can be slid in and automatically connected to everything that it needs, like a docking station. Then you can slide the laptop out when you need to go without having to unplug anything.

@bhudson that’s really ambitious! Got me thinking - but my laptop is for display as well as for power: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:603859
May 12, 2016 at 9:54 am #29718@drivingmenuts Tidy… no-one likes dangly cables! WiFi they said! Bluetooth they said! NFC they said! Still got wires everywhere… 🙁
May 12, 2016 at 1:57 pm #29739@bhudson - thought about that. There are two problems and one of them is a biggie.
Macs are machined to very tight tolerances - I’m going to have to get my printer really dialed in, including material shrinkage, etc., before I’m going to be able get things to mate properly. Macs do not have edges that allow you to guide things in - if you’re off by even the smallest amount, things do not mate properly. I have a Henge dock sitting around that I still haven’t gotten to “just work” with my Macbook Pro (thus the brackets).
@chrisyt - if you saw the underside of my desk right now … actually, I just added a picture to the gallery (multiple cats included for scale). More iterating on the design ahead. Also, it turns out, I put the brackets on the wrong side of my desk - I need to move them to the left side so my knee doesn’t hit them getting in and out.

I have two cats and too many computers.May 12, 2016 at 3:01 pm #29741The second problem I forgot to mention was one of size. The print bed is not large enough to create a bracket of size needed to allow for smooth mounting/dismounting. Even if I piece it out, material shrinkage rears it’s head yet again.
If only I had access to a CNC machine …

I have two cats and too many computers.May 12, 2016 at 4:25 pm #29750@drivingmenuts Sounds like you are using the wrong material. Try XT. I don’t see any measurable shrinkage. I usually get parts within 0.005 of design dimension and often for simple parts 0.002.

I got some ColorFabb CO-Pet and frankly, that stuff is amazing. If I wanted everything printed in orange, I’d be all about that.
Will order some XT when everything else stops sucking up all my funds.
