Everywhere I can read “life time of PLA is short”.
But what happens when PLA reaches end of its life cycle? Does anybody seen how it looks? I mean, with real printed PLA thing at home, not with disposable dish at dump…

08/04/2016 at 6:56 pm #28823From experience i know that old or incorrectly stored PLA(not sure which) is extra brittle and the filament can just snap in the bowden tubs(or anywhere really).

10/04/2016 at 12:13 pm #28854I’m just running a little test out of curiosity. I’ve had a new gate fitted and the latch and bolt need packing to line up with the holes in the gate post. so rather than use bits of wood or metal to pack them I’ve printed custom packers, the same shape as the lock and latch plate so it looks tidy.
I’ve only got PLA in black at the moment so was curios to see how long it lasted when outside in the rain and sun.
I’ll keep the models though to re-print in XT or something later. I’ll let you know how they fair over the summer.

13/04/2016 at 9:57 am #28986I did the same thing. After 2 years it still looked as new. (only a bit dirtier). nothing degraded.
When I read up on the degradability of PLA I found that it degrates at higher temperatures. No degradation below 60’C.

To flip the question: Are there any printable plastics that do degrate at normal temperature? To make things for temporary usage that degrade after a time?
Regards,
Bert
