My Robox is a Blue Commercial Version

i think that the robox what i got, works as good as it will ever be possible for this printer at the moment. but nothing came easy, it wasn’t out of the box working printer, definitely not, countless hours of calibrations, settings tweaking, test printing and after all that work i got the printer to print something. but that’s not the hole story, before every new print, robox must be recalibrate, tweak settings again and again, make test prints and then finally try to print what was in the plan. so if this 3d-printing thing is an hobby where you have to all the time tweak and test, i started to think why not to move in a totally open system. spare parts always available fast, different modifications, strong community with new hacks and mods, bug fixes, new software updates, no need to wait month after moth..

robox will stay my second unit, there are days when with works okay, but the support, software, customer service.. well maybe they will fix all of those things. my strong believe is that the day when CEL has fixed all these flaws they will present to very same day ROBOX 2..

anyways thanks for all the tips etc, i will keep posting some ROBOX prints and settings if asked and helps someone..

I’m thinking along exactly the same lines. Never got my Robox working reliably, and it’s too proprietary and restrictive to really help much with or feel part of a bigger project. At the end of the day, I feel like all we’re doing is helping CEL make money by helping them create a successful product and not really contributing to the wider 3D printing community.

May I ask what printer you’ve decided to order? I’ve so far looked at Printrbot Plus Metal, Lulzbot TAZ 4 and Zmorph. One thing they must be able to do is be capable (with adaptation) of printing flexible filament.

cause i am in a feeling to build the whole machine and to understand it’s every part i ordered a diy-kit velleman K8400

    http://www.vertex3dprinter.eu/

my second strong choice was Lulzbot TAZ 4, a printer that’s has been in dozens reviews inside top 5 and i really like everything what they do. i will probably order one of those too one day :)

Zmorph is a interesting concept but not convinced about the print quality and in some youtube videos i got the feeling that it is a very slow printer. and some forums someone said that it is just an overpriced mendel prusa. this is sad, cause the voxel based software looked very promising, also it would be nice to use the laser cutter..

what i’ve seen about Printrbot Plus Metal, gives feeling that it is a very good machine. but don’t know how to support and software things are.

..and one thing to mention what guided my choice is that the printer has an local distributor and here if there is problems with the product you get an new one or money back in couple of days..

@krasu - Thanks for the link. They’re selling the kit in the UK for around £500 mark, which looks like a pretty good deal. There doesn’t seem to be a heated print bed though? And I can’t see where the extruder is positioned - is it a bowden type printer or one where the extruder is mounted over or near the head? If it’s not the latter, then we’ll never print flexible filament in it unless it’s the rigid type (layfomm, etc).

But, all that said, the component parts do look nice and the example prints look fantastic. Almost too good to be true!

    here is couple links

story about the earlier version k8200
    https://algorithmicart.wordpress.com/

it doesn’t have heating bed because it uses
    http://www.buildtak.eu/
according to manufacturer this printer will not need one
    http://forum.velleman.eu/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=12979
but in the manual they mention that there will be in the near future optional heating bed
    http://images.velleman.eu/manuals/vertex/using/02/010.jpg

here building instructions, i recommend to read them before buying an diy-printer
    http://manuals.velleman.eu/article/1-what-s-in-the-box-4.html

    some printing instructions
    http://manuals.velleman.eu/article/7-repetier-explained-23.html

this model just came out, don’t know if it can print ninja flex or similar materials, but the earlier version k8200 can, so i think that this printer will also print anything inside the temperature limits.

    hope these links helps :)

My Robox is a Green Kickstarter Limited Edition

Oh, wait! I just remembered something!!! On CEL’s stand there was a hand printed with NinjaFlex!!!

Now, I, kind of, doubt it was there but printed by some other printer. Oh, I really wish to understand why CEL doesn’t want to talk to us :( That question is so straightforward (did they printed it or not) and would be answered within a minute and help us with our doubts or not…

I was not able to get NinjaFlex to feed, but I have been able to get ZenToolWorks flex to feed and I am working on developing the print profile for it. I have found that difficult filaments need the filament guide removed to shorten the path to the extruder. I may design and print a new extruder guide to allow almost direct feed into the extruder without removing the side panel.

I will keep working on it and will let everyone know if I can get anything out of the flexible filaments I have.

I heard from Chris today on a couple of points and they are swamped. They are sorting out several issues, including uneven beds, new bed mapping, worn out extruders, and making sure that production stays on track with the changes. I am sure that if they could get on the forums more, they would be happy to answer your questions. There just aren’t enough hours in the day for them right now.

I operate two Betas and one Production Robox.

don’t get me wrong. not gonna turn my back to robox, great machine when it works how it should work. but now i urgently need an printer with dual nozzles and at the end if i have two good working printers, i can distribute print works between them and save some time perhaps : )

Must admit @krasu you’ve sold it to me! I would like to try building my own and the spec looks good and the prints look almost suspiciously excellent! It was actually their manual on printing with two nozzles that really sold it to me. The results are fantastic and I thought that has to be worth a £500 punt.

Shame it’s another bowden style extruder, but you can’t have everything as we discussed in another thread. The Velleman forum also responded within minutes of me posting a question about flexible filaments.

Like you, my Robox has never been reliable and basically I need something reliable to print with over the winter. It would also ease my frustrations over the Robox being continually broken - CEL can take as long as they like if I have another printer that I’m using!

@bhudson - have you tried oiling the filament? Been quite a lot of work on the Ultimaker forums and it seems a little light machine oil will get it through the bowden tube. You might still have some issues where it enters the nozzle, but having a bowden extruder isn’t necessarily a showstopper.

talked with one guy who has a small business running around k8200 (doing some helicopter and drone parts), he told that it will take time and really careful thinking to have a velleman to print good prints, but when you get there, it is an working horse, hundreds hours of printing without any maintenance, it just keep working.. so let’s us to be prepared, it ain’t gonna be easy but at the end of the building and calibration of the printer, i strongly believe that it’s a printer where you don’t have to be guessing what’s going on… : ) and hopefully side of it, well working robox too : )

@biscuitlad I will try a little oil. I have several other things to try first, though, as the filament fed well until the extruder started to skip. I am guessing with the proper profile I will be able to feed it without the oil. I have started work on a contract, though, so it will be a little while before I get time to play with it.
