Although my printer is working okay, the print head is occasionally making some noises it hadn’t done until now. I really just want to pre-empt a problem that might be happening which I don’t know about. The noise is like a vibration that you sometimes get when the frequency of a machine noise disturbs something like a drinking glass. Has anyone else experienced this? Also at what point is it necessary to replace the print head? I have replaced it once, but that was really because the prints got into such a mess initially that I felt it was best start with a clean one.

On prints that extend to the maximum available X height, an X protection switch is often turned on automatically. It takes me a little time to release this - closing AutoMaker, switching off the computer, etc. How best is it to resolve this?

@paulsroom The print head should not need to be replaced due to anything except a failure of the print head, which is usually blown seals. Your original print head was probably not calibrated correctly and caused the problems you were seeing.

The vibration is probably not the print head itself, unless it is the fan on top. That is the only reason you will have vibration coming from the print head. While the print head is cold, see if you can wiggle the fan in the print head. If it does wiggle, that may result in some vibration. You are probably hearing bearings that need to be lubricated. Add one drop of the supplied lubrication to the bottom large rail of the X axis and then run the X test or move the head back and forth manually to spread the oil in the bearings. Do not oil the top rail.

There is another source of noise - the Z axis limit pin may start to squeal on the upper X axis rod. There is no known solution for this issue that I am aware of.

@paulsroom You should be able to manually move the gantry down with the Z down buttons as soon as the print completes. I haven’t seen this error in a while but usually that is what I do.
