Interesting video (especially if dual extruder came available but PVA not yet), although it must be pointed out that NaOH is a very nasty/dangerous chemical.

However, there must be a quicker/easier solvent that acts on PLA but not on ABS, so the same result could be possibly obtained in a different way. Anyway:

the supports are interesting, they look very light weight.

But just dumping everyting in that bath is just stupid,
a lot of the supports can be removed manually before dumping everything into this poison,
disolving less material and creating less waste,
which no doubt goes right into the sewer system.

    Interesting yes.

PVA support will be water soluble which is much friendlier but PVA apparently absorbs water at a very high rate so we will all be double bagging and shouting at each other while using it. Prototype designs for the 2nd reel holder have considered the effect of moist air on raw filament.

I am really excited about all the experiments we can do with combined materials. What will stick to what? What will support each material best? Flexible and rigid materials combined!

@pete will the upcoming dual extruder material really allow us to use flexible and rubber filaments? as in the video below?

Ninjaflex has a new product called Semiflex which we have a sample of. The ninjaflex rep is hassling me to test it, I really want to but I am sure it will take a lot of fiddling so need to be able to commit some time to testing.

Delegate the work to us, kickstarters and forum users :)

If you can convince Ninjaflex to send to a few of us (as many as you can convince them)
samples of semiflex, I’m very sure there are enough volunteers to do that fiddling.

On a side note, I use to do a lot of casting of resins, rubber, plastics, and even metals (very small true-metal spheres bond by special resins, compression strength is similar to pure metal). In fact part of my frustration in not having a working Robox is because I was hoping to make molds directly with a 3D printer, or single prints to then make silicone molds with it. In the past I have cast also aluminum, but not yet making a 3d printed object myself. There are many interesting techniques I’d like to try, e.g. using sacrifical PLA.

It’s a very powerful world, I would like to point out that you don’t have to print directly in rubber or whatever material, you can do it in any material suitable to make e.g. a silicone rubber mold and then just cast the rubber or whatever into it (disclaimer: I have no affiliation whatsoever with Prochima, I’m just a happy customer). For a single piece it may not be convenient, but if you have to produce several objects, 3d printing all of them would take ages: instead you print only one, make a silicone rubber mold out of it, and then just cast resins or similar to ~quickly produce many copies in whatever material (among those possible, but the possibilities are nearly endless) you wish.

Silicone molds are very easy and straightforward to make, for example look at this video.

I’m even saving all the scrap ABS and PLA pieces I produced in my troubleshooting experiments, sometime I will put them on a solder pot, liquify them and cast them into a mold, so I get real ABS or PLA parts again.

With these links I’ve just only scrapped the surface of this world, believe me there are many impressive and smart, simple techniques to achieve great results. I just wanted to stimulate some interest, that’s all. I think that a 3D printer is the perfect companion to these techniques, I should get my replacements in 1-2 days and I will finally start using it for these purposes.

    Kind regards,
    Fabio

    I don’t mind buying a sample reel, too…

I would not mind trying out a sample reel as well, @Pete if you could only let Dan know that I am still waiting for him to ship me the missing extruder to bowden tube connector, I might be printing again after a few months of downtime.

Is NaOH suitable for vaporize pla prints? That other stuff is no good for it, not like abs/acetone anyway….

ROFL - couldn’t refrain: your avatar picture + talking about Sodium hydroxide. ;)

:p after some googling i realised its pretty much same stuff that sewer cleaner, ive done some aluminium cleaning with it in past…. good ventilation is needed indeed. Anyway i put one failed print in jar partially soaked to see if it smooths anything.

Btw, i would lovw to print my avatar, but i cant find disk where my old blender stuff is :(
