@chrisyt That 1 software engineer deserves a medal - cracking job so far!
Anyway, keep up the good work, I look forward to trying out the fix.

@chrisyt Thanks for the comprehensive answer - it’s disappointing but I understand the problem. Hopefully the fix you make will at least reduce the defects to something less noticeable.
I read the ongoing discussion on github - what a poor show. I guess that’s what happens if you rely on open source software, totally unprofessional approach and…[Read more]

@bhudson Thanks very much for checking the file and running it through your printer. Some interesting observations! I will check the gantry later (just printing something else at the moment).
But the nozzle path reversal sounds much more likely to be the cause of the defect - hopefully something that can be fixed in a software update?

Attachment was too big - trying again zipped.

@bhudson Netfabb doesn’t show any errors, and it looks ok on the viewer.
I’ve attached the STL here if that helps - maybe you or someone would be kind enough to print it so we know whether it’s an issue with my printer or not.
I will try a non spiral print as you suggested.

I’ve been having some issues with spiral printing of vases. On some designs there is a defect that runs roughly vertically through the vase, and it is very reproducible between prints. The STL file looks perfect when opened in a viewer. The attached picture shows the problem. The sides not shown are perfect.
Could this be a problem with the…[Read more]

John Ellison replied to the topic Best material for spiral vase printing in the forum Materials 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Thanks for the advice! I did a few experiments and am getting better results with 1mm or 1.2mm extrusion. However this wider extrusion seems to cause problems with the transition from the bottom layer to the spiral layer. But at least it’s watertight with colorfabb xt.
Best results are still with crystal clear abs, but I will play with the…[Read more]

Thanks Pete, I have seen that post. I think it was ABS that was used?
I’m just wondering if anyone has had experience printing in other materials. And in particular why colorfabb xt doesn’t seem to work very well in this application and what I could tweak to improve things. In all other respects I’ve found the colorfabb xt to be excellent.

Can anyone recommend a good material for printing spiral vases? By good I mean something that gives a smooth finish and doesn’t leak when you fill the vase with water!
So far I’ve found Crystal Clear ABS to give the best results. Surprisingly my favourite material up to now, Colorfabb XT, was actually pretty poor with a fairly grainy texture…[Read more]

OK, the response back is that the new firmware is too “picky” and a fix is being worked on! So hopefully I won’t have to return the printer for repair.

@bhudson Thanks for the input - I opened a ticket.

@bhudson Are we sure this is a hardware problem? I have printed >8cm successfully using the older Automaker, the problem seemed to coincide with the upgrade. Also, the dialog that pops up implies that by clicking “Continue” the print will be allowed to continue past the Z protection point at the user’s discretion, but this does not work - the same…[Read more]

When the print reaches 8cm high the machine stops with a message about the Z axis limit switch being activated. You then have the option to Abort the print or Continue (since there is still 2cm height available for printing). Clicking on continue just causes the head to move down, then back up immediately and the message re-appears. There is no…[Read more]
