    Hi all 🙂

Last weekend I setup my new Root device which allows me to connect to my Robox via WiFi – it works brilliantly!

… until, that is, I tried to print quite a complex file … AutoMaker got about 20% of the way through sending the printing data to the printer before it timed out and said something along the lines of ‘this will result in an incomplete print’.

As the printer had already started printing I just ignored this message and assumed the print would complete successfully … but sure enough it stopped about 20% the way through the print and I had to manually cancel the print and bin the incomplete part!

Obviously the transfer speed is limited by the WiFi speed (I don’t know if the Raspberry Pi inside the Root has a particularly fast WiFi chip?), but is there at least a way to disable the timeout when sending files to the printer to make sure this problem doesn’t happen again?

    Many thanks,

    David

There are some functions which will allow a broken connection to resume transfer but they could be more robust. The WiFi transfer speed available between AM and Root is significantly less than a direct USB connection so it will take longer. In a situation where WiFi signal drops often it will be better to use a physical connection via a network cable or USB. Smaller files will have less chance of breaks but if a file is not complete then the printer will not be able to complete the job.

Typical wifi signal fixes will help.

    • Physical signal blocking. Short range with nothing in the way is best, metal and solid masonry walls are bad.
    • Other wifi devices, reducing the number of devices on the network has improved errors in our office. We have a fancy router (still just a home style one) but we have 10+ staff with smart devices and at least 6 Roots plus other printers and laptops in a metal building full of metal racking.

I have the same problem with more complex designs using Root and ethernet. It is fine with simple designs, so WiFi may not be the root cause (no pun intended) of the problem.

I have resorted back to using a laptop and USB until an update is published.

The Raspberry also goes into sleep during a print and so you have to disconnect then re-connect again.

Automaker sometimes also fails to recognise filament even though it is on a Robox reel. Again disconnecting then re-connecting Root fixes this feature.
