    Wel, after a sum total of 3 hours trying to print with this thing weekend before last and having been unable to calibrate the nozzle height at all without errors my Robox returned to be ‘fixed’. Clearly the guys in Portishead managed to get it printing but on return, having run through the nozzle calibration and bed levelling calibrations I returned to my nemesis, that is the nozzle height calibration.

    Same error persists, cannot calibrate nozzles - contact CEL.

    Don’t think that message is a show stopper. In fact I remember during the beta it would appear erroneously. Not saying you should ignore it, but we generally just ignored it - it was usually down to a blocked nozzle or something. A manual purge often made it go away.

    It’s not so much the warning but the fact that I cannot get the nozzles to calibrate and produce anything that doesn’t smear, string or lift off the PEI bed. It’s getting a little dull, especially at just shy of a grand.

    I didn’t buy the printer to join a beta testing program!

    Same here David,
    but we’re in that water now and I choose to swim in it.

    The beta program is still shrouded is mist and myth,
    that can mean only one thing to me: something went wrong,
    and nobody is eager to clear the fog on that.
    That’s the prerogative of being in the beta program I guess,
    now we’re all in the beta 2.0 program, hope the same mistakes are not repeated, whatever they were.

    Wow! on the tenth attempt I got it to calibrate and now have something printing. Let’s hope it doesn’t lift off the bed, smear, blob or otherwise fail and it might be my second print in a little over ten days.

    I wish CEL read these flipping forums a bit more!

    Take a non-stick scrubber or a piece of steel wool and scrub the back of the top bar on the gantry (X-Axis). Also clean the small metal contact on the head carrier that touches the top gantry bar. I fought with this problem for months in the beta program and finally glued small pieces of scrubber to clean the top bar during operation. After two months they are discolored with residue that has been scrubbed off the bar.

    You may also want to adjust the small plastic spring bar on the back of the head. If it isn’t pushing against the top bar hard enough, the motion of the head will jar the contact away from the top bar and trigger the limit switch.

    CEL doesn’t have time to read the forums. They barely have time to answer support requests for the hundreds of people who are experiencing problems that came up as a result of the production run of printers, problems that didn’t come up in the Beta program.

    But you chose a cheap 3D printer from a company with no experience of making them but making grand claims? Caveat emptor….

    The thing is, there are many ‘pop up’ companies trying to flog you a 3D printer these days - indeed, there’s a new one every fortnight or so on the crowdfunding platforms. If something seems too good to be true, it always is when it comes to 3D printers.

    The process of 3D printing is more complicated than many give it credit, and certainly much more complicated than many consumers are prepared for. A company like CEL has zero experience of making and supporting these things, so there was always a risk the first year would end in tears for some. I’ve not printed anything for over two months!

    But try and temper your frustration. Perhaps you can describe in detail what your problem is, the steps to reproduce it, and so on. We can’t help if we don’t know a bit more, and neither can CEL.

    3D printing kickstarters are surpassed by free energy projects a multiple times :)
    It turned as a hobby for me the last year to ask nasty questions to them, some try to ban me for being abusive LOL

    @pelgrim Yes, but it’s a bit much to say something is ready for market, start taking payments and making deliveries with the knowledge that there is much left to do. I didn’t buy into the beta, I waited for release and paid like a regular punter, not being able to see the beta forum means that you assume much went well. Maybe not.

    @biscuitlad I bought from a company with a proven track record in the UK of delivering many innovative and successful products, I don’t think £900 is cheap, not when I could have opted for any number of reprap clones (cobblebot et al). It’s a chunk of investment. I’d like it to work. I’d like CEL to be successful. I’d like a bit more input from the technical support team. I think you’re right though, they’re snowed under!

    @ bhudson, for now I got it to calibrate (once) so I’m going to use those settings. The really, really, really frustrating thing is, when I opened the box there was a test piece of abs, everything aligned, reasonably well printed, a bit of blobbing but not much. So, I know it is capable of printing correctly and clearly, in the right hands, it’s possible to calibrate the thing. Plug and play 3D printer? Not a snowballs chance in hell at the moment though.

    Right, after an hour trying to get the nozzles to calibrate I finally succeeded. First prints were some little adjusters for the cctv lenses I use, these help to make fine focus adjustments when the lenses are inside the shrouds, otherwise you have to reach in with chubby fingers, press hard and try and mash the lenses round to adjust them.

    Hey, it printed fine (some small gaps and a little blobbing and stringing but nothing I couldn’t trim off and tidy up).

    Next I printed the test enclosure with rounded edges to test to see if this helps stop corner curl. It printed really well for normal, and quite quickly too. Results weren’t bad at all. Some layer de-lamination but perhaps some tweaking of settings can deal with that?

    Third I printed a whole host of those lens adjusters for friends. It all went really well, stuck like poop to a blanket even without brim. I’m starting to like this little puppy a little more.

    Now printing a circular, large lens retainer, without brim. Let’s see how this one turns out!
