Hi all.
So for those not followed my buying advice post, just purchased my robox today. Would like to get some extra filament and have been suggested by @Aimdy to look at colorfab XT or PET+.
I live in the Uk and wonder where everybody goes to get there filament? Also if it’s best to get from Netherlands or something, what sort of import duty has been experienced? Seems USA is too cost prohibitive.
The boss has shown interest in buying time from me for a few prototype enclosures, therefore I would like to use a material that won’t embarrass me, so other suggestions welcome.
Do, or do not. There is no try.21/03/2015 at 5:29 am #16840Get started by spending a while doing PLA prints. Get used to how the unit works before you take the plunge into additional filament.
When you can get consistent prints with PLA, go with the ColorFabb _XT. I have built several enclosures from it and as long as you stay within the limits of the material you get reliable, good quality results. It gives a very wet, glossy finish. When you trim it or file it, the cut areas are matte. It can be sanded carefully and cut with a sharp knife. I find a sharp file works best to round edges and remove sagging bridge areas.
I can’t talk to a location in the UK but I can possibly put you in touch with someone who bought a really large quantity of _XT and may be interested in selling some of it. I think he bought 16 reels of black.
I have yet to find a material from ColorFabb that I don’t like, but the _XT gives the best results for normal printing that I have seen. There are other materials that excel in certain specific areas, but for general overall printing _XT is the best yet. It is brittle, though, when pushed out of its elastic zone. It will rebound to a point but if you push it past that point it just snaps. That is a pretty big deformation, though, I make leaf springs out of _XT and have strengths that rival steel coil springs.
I am not affiliated with CEL; I operate two Betas and one Production Robox.21/03/2015 at 2:25 pm #16852The Netherlands are an EU member nation, so there are no import duties or fees involved when ordering from the UK.
Colorfabb also have a fairly low shipping charge - I was charged €3.26 which google says is £2.36 right now, for one reel of black xt and the sample pack which I ordered a couple of weeks ago.
Reels of XT cost a bit more than CELs reels do, but you get a bit more (750g rather than 650g) and the shipping is lower, so I think it works out about the same in the end, at least for the basic black and white - the plain is probably a little cheaper and the other colours a little more.
Lovely stuff though from the modest number of prints I did over the last week or two.
21/03/2015 at 4:09 pm #16855This was cheapest t-glase i could find in ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/231472559970?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

22/03/2015 at 8:52 am #16861I’ve recently ordered from them. Shipping was €4.95 for 750g spool or €3.95 for two. Not bad.
It arrived quite quickly - same speed as second class within UK. Definitively hassle free…

@BHudson I had planned to use the CEL roll to do all my practice as you suggested, in fact your advice is sound, I’m just thinking that the boss will be pressing me for some samples soon and it would be nice to have that reel ready when I need to upgrade the look.
@andylion. Cheers. I thought EU country were not subjected to fees, but got a little confused when I looked up a duty Tax website that suggested I would have to pay an extra 6% duty fee, the price does not seem too prohibitive.
@Poju. Thanks for those links, have you bought these filaments directly before? I only ask because I’m always weary of genuine products being sold through Ebay. If they are vouched for, then I definitely think the T-glass is reasonably priced and will also consider.
@Click It’s a real bonus to hear that the delivery time is not on ‘Chinese new year’ delivery schedule.
I just loaded the basket and got some black in. wooohooo
Do, or do not. There is no try.22/03/2015 at 12:37 pm #16866I bought reel of t-glase, seems genuine to me. Havent print with it yet tho.
