    Thanks @robyneil - appreciate it.

Nope, didn’t use XTC, brass powder or shoe polish on the Bond piece (which is 8 inches tall).

I’ve seen the XTC adverts around, and almost got some, but I have an aversion to caustic liquids, so… it’s just good ol’ fashioned sandpaper, metal files and a dremel tool for smoothing and getting rid of the print lines. Be interested to know how the XTC works though…

For the faux bronzing, I use a product called Sophisticated Finishes - Blonde Bronze Metallic Surfacer from a company called Triangle Coatings. It’s bronze powder in an acrylic base medium. Has a nice sheen and luster to it, and it cleans up quickly with water. They make a whole line of these paints, in many different finishes. For the black detail work, I just use black acrylic paint.

The process is pretty basic. I put down a couple coats of primer. Then I put down a couple layers of the bronze paint. Drying time in between everything, of course. Then the next 2 steps are the tricky parts. I thin down the black acrylic paint and put down washes all over the model, wiping off excess with paper towels. I’m trying to get the black in the cracks and crevices to bring out the details. I just have to be careful to not be too heavy handed with the black. When I’m satisfied with that part, then I go back to the bronze paint and do a drybrushing pass to bring back the bronze on the high parts. Got to be careful on this step to not have the bronze too wet on the brush, or I wipe out my detail work. This step lets me get a nice contrast between the bronze and the black. Then I pretty much call it done.

That Arbalest model looks awesome. Looking forward to seeing your finished print. Yeah definitely challenges to prepping models. Since I use Zbrush in my daily work, I mainly use that for getting my stuff ready to print. They’ve recently added a lot of 3D printing functionality to their toolset, so it’s a pretty one-stop shop for me. I also use Maya and Blender for measuring and sizing. Figure I should learn some of the other apps like Meshmixer and netfabb sometime, but since the apps I already know work well enough, it’s not a super high priority.

aha, finally someone with the same mindset in the forum,
I really felt alone with my aversion to strange vapors and chemicals that melts away impurities in the surface finish.

@phivu3d Thanks for the detailed description on steps. I do have acrylic paints to try it with. Will let you know how it works out.
