I’m just over half way through my PLA reel (and nearly finished my ABS reel) and have found a potential problem that might explain a few problems. It appears that the filament has got slightly tangled when it was spooled on as the filament crosses itself.
I noticed it when I heard some grinding and other weird noises as it was printing, and then realised that the filament was struggling to be pulled in to the machine.
This could explain a variety of problems including the odd thin layer. Has anyone else noticed this?
Trying to spread the word about 3D printing to small and medium sized businesses in the West Midlands.

I started aiding robox the moment I hear that noise - but unwinding spool a bit more than needed…

AnonymousI always unravel five metres or so before any big print. Had filament get trapped several times and ruin prints. We discussed how the software could try and pause the print a while back. Not sure there is an easy solution.
November 7, 2014 at 1:17 pm #9079My PLA filament is heavily tangled and this caused a lot of trouble while trying to print and forced me to stay all the time near the Robox to ensure that the filament is always free to be fed into the extruder.
Very frustrating since the ABS spool seems to be fine.
November 7, 2014 at 1:19 pm #9081Ah, I noticed that only my PLA spool was bad - ABS - no issues at all! I left it printing for more than 5 hours yesterday - even went to bed before it finished and all was fine!
