I’m trying to print this head of Medusa. It is part of a full model of Perseus standing over the headless body of Medusa and holding the head aloft. I hope eventually to create a really big print of the full figure, which I will make from sections glued together. I sliced this head from the whole model using Meshmixer to see how it would print.
This head model is 85mm high and there is actually no problem printing it, as I found from my first attempt. The problem comes in removing the support material and the model broke at the wrist - all the snakes were fine and in tact. So my problem is how to give it strength. I believe that I have economised too much in only setting the fill to 20%.
Frankly I am rather spooked at how long the print will take if I set the fill very high and have not yet printed anything that runs for longer than ten hours. Increasing the settings of just this head is likely to cause it to run for possibly a full two days.
When they’re freely available, I hope to get another Robox with dual filament capability. I’d prefer to buy an additional machine than have my present Robox adapted. So I can’t print with one material for the model and another for the support. I sliced this head from the full model in a way that I could eliminate support from the face. This has meant that the features are clean and smooth.
The print is essentially very successful, but a disembodied hand looks rather odd since a full arm provides a kind of stand. The print also suggests that other parts of the full model would need a high strength setting.

You must be logged in to view attached files.19/09/2016 at 9:11 am #32746My preference right now is more perimeters rather than increased fill %. This creates a very strong shell but keeps the parts quite light, small sections become solid but large areas are less filled.
19/09/2016 at 10:08 am #32756@pete What happens if you specify a number of perimeters that actually works out to more than the thickness of certain features of the model. In the case of the Medusa, increasing the perimeter layers might actually make the snakes the equivalent of 100% fill. This is obviously okay but I just wonder if the slicer understands this.
19/09/2016 at 2:18 pm #32761If the number of perimeters cant fit it just does as many as it can. It is quite a nice way of creating solid details.
