It’s not open source or free in any sense, but you can get a free 3 year licence for Autodesk Inventor if you’re a pupil, student, or just work in education.

I’m using it and it’s got a steep learning curve, but it’s also got great features that Blender / Open SCAD will never have - want a perfect metric thread for that hole? Done! Recess for an M6 bolt and washer? Done! Boss for joining two parts? Done. Snap fit connectors? One touch ribs? Special environment for designing plastic parts? etc. etc.

No it’s not multiplatform, touchy feely open source. It’s industrial strength CAD. But with plenty of help files. If you can get it free for three years, I’d recommend it.

The only downer is the nearly 7GB you have to download to install it… lucky the university’s bandwidth is up to the job, eh? 😉

I feel like “defending” Blender, not that it really needs it, but your claim isn’t all that fair.

    Boltfactory
same would go for the other features.

Free (unlimited in time), no 7Gb to download and install.
Whatever the challenge, the open source community will face it and solve it.

OK, it was a mistake to reveal Blender as the object of my frustration!

I have just had a look at that script to add bolts. Can I just say I much prefer the way Autodesk does it? 😉

you just did and you were(are) more then welcome to do just that haha.
I (re)started learning blender last week, after years of doing nothing much in 3D, and back then it was 3D Studio Max and at the end a fast look at blender.
Things have changed a lot, and for the better. For the moment it’s hard to imagine something can’t be modeled in blender,
whatever standards that have to be met.

I’ll watch everything from within my seat, which is a hobbyist on a low budget.
With open source software as good as it is today, it’s the hardware and my imagination/skills that are the limits I will bump in to.
