There’s probably an existing .stl or .obj or cad file of the Robox 3D printer. It’d be nice to make it available to Robox owners, even just the door and just the case internals with solid infill to keep intellectual property yours, but keep the print area empty for us to freely model inside it and outside the case.

I was thinking of designing a smoke detector attachment on the printer. But since there are no rods or obvious places to design a holder with, the next best thing is to know the exact dimensions of the case and the door. With that, we can design more user friendly and responsible mods (things that wont be detrimental to safety and functionality) for the printer. Sure we can always measure, but getting it from the source would be a boon.

    Ideas for mods and enhancements:

    1) Smoke Detector holder (inside or outside of printer). One of the reviewers from Amazon had a problem with smoking fumes understandably a risk for all 3d printers but still would be nice if made easier for owners to design their preferred smoke detector holders for these events.

    2) Better filament trap catcher by changing the bottom front panel with sliding removable catcher. This will ensure discarded filaments won’t interfere with mechanical parts. My door latch stopped working recently because of a lodged filament. Currently removing the panel, lifting/tilting the printer, and “shaking” filaments loose doesn’t seem to be safe and I feel like I might break something inside.

    3) Case door open latch override mechanically connected to the pause button on the SmartReel spooler (we obviously will pause it first before opening case) in case of overextrusion, filaments getting into Y rod, tall print getting dislodged from bed blocking Y motion…that happened to me by the way…hearing the belts screech was traumatic, etc…I know I can send open door gcode G37 but it takes awhile (a few minutes) to execute. The fan turns on first to lower the temps, but sometimes I just need to get inside there like right now before things get worse.

    4) Web cam holder so that we can monitor the sound (google 3d printer zelda music) and status of the printer. This will work nicely with the smoke detector and send the alert to a monitor app on our phones. As gung ho I am about baby sitting my prints, monitoring an 18hr print is no joke.

Cel can and should give us meaningful guidelines on creating these mods. As a community, we can always determine whether a mod or enhancement is safe and if it makes common sense. Thank you for your consideration.

Manifesting ideas is still difficult, but at least we're one step closer...

There is never a stupid question, your only stupid if you do not ask and go ahead!

Prime example and no joke was when I was doing a pyro display once. The rule of no smoking next to the pyro was pretty clear I thought but this guy took example to it and poof, the finale (very end set price of a disaply) went up with him stood next to it with no PPE on. Oh and this was a fan (left, center, right arrangment) so it did hit him. This was a mix of
10x 16” shells (biggest allowed in the Uk)
    10x 8” shells
    5x 6” shells
    20x 4”shells
    10x 3” shells

£2000 easy just for the end of the show

The question put forward before he went pop was why am I not allowed to smoke when we’ve live pyro out. When I’d finished putting the fire out on him I ask him, so why do we not smoke or having any naked flames when live pyro is out. Fair play to him his response was because that happens! The result was an amazing display in the day time, lots of noise, no finale for the show, an upset show orgnaiser, an angry boss and this guy had blow his arm off, 1st degree burns across his chest, face, neck and lost an eye.

So inshort always ask as you’ll never be called thick dumb or stupid. No one’s an expert but they will understand what you don’t which make them look like an expert but they will never know something you have the answer for. As my mum said, Don’t ask Don’t get!

I should have an MQ-2 gas/smoke sensor arriving shortly (ordered Monday morning) which I’m going to hack up to a relay and an Espruino board I’ve already got monitoring environmental sensors. That sends data to a Raspberry Pi I use as my alarm clock and Wii-Remote-to-iPad-iBooks-page-turner, which can also set off alarms. I’m also wondering if there’s some sort of electronically-triggered extinguisher available…

@biscuitlad : the nozzles contain thermal sensors acting as a software-moderated thermostat. The ambient temperature sensor would probably be a better bet, but that’s going to have a lag time… by the time the build volume heats up, something’s probably on fire already.

Just came across this USD 9.00 device which connects to any cheap $15 smoke alarm from the same manufacturer and can be wired to switch OFF (or on) up to 10 Amps. Unfortunately available in 120V only.

Another option is this $50 smoke detector with integrated GSM module. When smoke is detected, it not only set off the audible alarm, but also can call up to 10 different numbers and additionally send text messages (SMS) to 10 different numbers. If you don’t mind the bulkiness, you can get for the same money an entire GSM wireless alarm system, which does the same and more.

To the latter one could furthermore add a GSM-controlled power switch (to be remote controlled manually) and a webcam.

Smoke alarm for 3D printers: Not a bad idea, but some kind of notification system (a WiFi-based push notification would be state of the art) or at least an audible alarm is needed to make it complete. Because the fire doesn’t necessarily stop just from “pulling the plug”.

Yes, it is a problem, and something Bad™ could indeed happen.

It’s a question of how to sense a problem though. I wonder whether it’s worth fitting an MQ-2 smoke sensor inside the Robox. Hmm. Off to eBay…

There is a hidden USB connection (unpopulated) inside the Robox for future expansion. Fitting an internal camera (and perhaps sensors, fire extinguishers, etc.) is something that’s come up a lot before. Exposure and focussing are problematic though.

I just found this printer today and is seriously considering taking the money from the refund offered by the chronically delayed 3d printer kickstarter project I am involved in now and get a robox instead. One of the big selling points was your supposed ability to print in 20microns but from what I’ve seen so far that seems to be just smoke and mirrors. Is this indicative of your attention to other aspects of the project as well I start to wonder?

sold as a head plus a filter module attached outside the robox,
mounted in a diy hole in the box with a closing cap for when I want to print in a heated box again.

Now that I think of that, my feature request for a isomo cutter will have the same smoke issue …

The smoke issue can be easily solved with a small hose near the laser head which gets routed through a carbon filter to the outside of the Robox and then attached e.g. to a vacuum cleaner. No unsolvable problems.
