    I started to model (in blender, not that it matters for this topic).
    Is there an automated way to evaluate the exported ply file to make sure it’s printable ?

    You should be exporting STL format files. NetFab Basic will tell you if there are faults in the mesh as created (plus fix them for you). You may need to add support structures (which Slic3r can do automatically) but other than that the rest is experience.

    thanx for the advice, but I run linux and NetFab isn’t supporting that yet.

    Then use their cloud based repair tool.

    @sweeney
    took your advice with their repair tool.
    Although I can’t test it on a printer, it did something to my stl file:
    it changed from 3.9 Mb to 6.6 Mb.

    After importing I can’t notice any difference in the design.

    CAD programs often make mistakes when rendering STL files. They may not cause problems for viewing but will cause issues for the slicing app. Generally it’s quicker to try slicing first, and if it complains then repair. Either way you’ll need to wait for a copy of Automaker to try it out properly.
